I trust that this newsletter finds you well and in good spirits. Assessments have been concluded for the most part, except for the Year 9 BECE examinations, which will start in early July. The Progressive Tests completed recently are online assessments for Years 7-10 students in the core subjects. These accurately measure how our college and students perform in English, Mathematics, and Science and measure both in-year and year-on-year progress. This is a valuable tool as it highlights strengths and gaps in reading and core subjects plus, reveals barriers to learning, and identifies and supports students with additional educational needs. provide evidence of progress, and parents will be supplied a copy of the report. directly inform teaching strategies. Our Year 12 students have now completed the WAEC examinations, and we look forward to the Continue reading
Dear Parents and Friends, I trust all is well and that you had time to spend with family and friends over the festive season.
Our students in residence returned on Sunday, with the whole school resuming this Monday. Some students found it challenging to stay alert at the assembly as they were still in holiday mode and nodding off. But we will soon shake off the rust of the holidays and full steam ahead in the routines of teaching & learning and co-curricular activities. We want to thank our parents for ensuring that the students turned up ready and having the right gear. Continue reading…..
I trust that this newsletter finds you well. Today culminated in the last day of this term, a period filled with many activities – from examinations to inspections and celebrations to reflections.
We find ourselves in the Christmas period with opportunities to spoil our loved ones not only with material gifts but with the blessings of love, friendship, attention, and care. But spare a thought for those who are less fortunate than we are, spiritually and materially. And when the noise of this world quiets down, we can meditate on our blessings and how, as an individual, a family, and a community, we can spread goodwill. After all, Margaret J. Wheatley stated, ‘Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful.’ Continue reading…
I trust that all is well and that your week has been a productive one thus far.
We had a good turnout for the Parents Teachers Forum on Saturday, with 100 parents logging on to the Zoom platform, which is fantastic. The feedback was good, and it became clear that the College and parents have some things to improve. However, it’s an exciting journey, and together we will take the College to new heights! Continue reading….
Dear Parents and Friends, I trust that this newsletter finds you well. The Parents Visiting Day was well attended, and the students enjoyed the visit from their respective families. Also, the Continuous Assessment week went well, and parents will be able to glean their child’s scores from the JHC SDS system from the 29th of October 2023 onwards.
HEALTH ALERT: As you are aware, conjunctivitis is currently spreading through our communities, we even had a few cases amongst our students recently. Conjunctivitis is a viral infection and can be extremely contagious through contact with secretions from infected persons. Continue reading….
Dear Parents and Friends, I trust that all is well. This is the last newsletter for the academic year and as a school community we are certainly blessed as there are a myriad of things to be proud of.
Tomorrow the academic year will conclude with the 2023 JHC Annual Prizegiving which is always a highlight as we celebrate the achievements of our students and motivate all to do their best. Next year we will be in a purpose-built hall where we are able to accommodate all our parents and friends. Continue reading ….
Dear Parents and Friends, It was like only yesterday when term three started and now we are at half-term break today – time flies when we are occupied with lots of activity and enjoying ourselves. JHC had several activities and events concluded and this will be reported on in the next newsletter such as the ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ expedition, Languages celebration, etc. A reminder to our parents that with every end of half-term and term, students will only be released after the final lesson and not before then. Unlike some other schools, JHC teaches up to the final period of that final day and parents are expected to plan accordingly. Continue reading…
Known for recaps and resolutions, each new year often starts with retrospection and…the month of January. January, as we know, is the first month of the year and contains 31 days. The term originated before the year 1000 from Middle English, ultimately deriving from the Latin noun use of Jānuārius, equivalent to Jānus. In ancient Roman culture, Jānus was a god of doorways, beginnings, and the rising and setting of the sun. As the god of transitions, Janus is often depicted with two, bearded heads that face in opposite directions, looking to both the future and the past. After 153 BCE, January (mensis Januarius in Latin) became the first month of the Roman calendar (which we adopted), the figure of Janus a perfect symbol for new beginnings.
Dear Parents and Friends, Today is the last day of term, after which, we break for the Xmas holidays, both staff and students are looking forward to a relaxing holiday. When students go home today each will deliver an envelope that contains the progress report, outlines for schemes of work, photograph, College Yearbook, etc. The invoices for term two will be emailed within the next day, or so.
I trust that all is as well as it can be. JHC is currently doing continuous assessments with internalterm three examinations starting on the 7th of June 2021. A virtual meeting was held last week Saturday (15th May 2021) with parents of Year 7, 8 and 9 students – thank you parents, for making the effort
Here follows a summary of topics discussed:
Covid vaccinations & PCR tests: The goal is to have staff and other campus dwellers vaccinated before resumption of the new academic year. Alternatively, a negative PCR test will be required. The same information will be shared with our regular vendors. To note, I can confirm that this has already begun to further improve the JHC covid-free bubble.
The JHC Pledge: Two parents mentioned issues pertaining to the sharing of schemes of work and students’ personal items. A reminder that all parents have the right to contact the principal via his email and/or mobile number (shared at the end of every newsletter and on the JHC web site) if it is felt that the desired outcome has not been resolved with the specific staff.
No doubt, it was a productive meeting and a healthy exchange of views, but I do miss our face-to- face meetings. Importantly, the JAMB dates have been announced and this should not impact the IGCSE examination schedule. However, we are still waiting on the release of the WAEC examination schedule.
In conclusion, “Few things in the world are more powerful than a positive push. A smile. A world of optimism and hope. A ‘you can do it’ when things are tough.”; also, “It is a wonderful thing to be optimistic. It keeps you healthy and it keeps you resilient.”; and not forgetting that “A good laugh is sunshine in the house”, or workplace, but don’t laugh too loud otherwise the boss might think that you are up to mischief.
Be safe until we meet again.
Yours truly Abraham. P. Swart Principal
