Dear Parents and Friends,
Staff and students started the last half-term of this academic year in earnest as our Year 9 students engaged in the BECE examinations and the Year 7 and 8 students with the end of year internal examinations; and all is going very smooth thus far.
Research and experimentation is ongoing and this is no different to education, and every so often a truly ground-breaking idea comes along which causes a paradigm shift – Growth Mindset is such and it explains:
* Why brains and talent don’t bring success
* How they can stand in the way of it
* Why praising brains and talent doesn’t foster self-esteem and accomplishment, but jeopardises them
* How teaching a simple idea about the brain raises grades and productivity
Mindset is a simple idea discovered by world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck in decades of research on achievement and success—a simple idea that makes all the difference. Opposite to a growth mindset is the fixed mindset where people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities. Teaching a growth mindset creates motivation and productivity in the worlds of business, education, and sports. It enhances relationships.
In our interactions with our students, whether inside or outside the class, we attempt to apply some of these principles – yes, open-mindedness, thinking outside the box, etc., have immense value in growing and developing skills in our students, readying them to be contributing members of society and impacting on it in a positive way. Dear Parents and Friends,
James Hope College is a hive of activity as we attempt to complete the necessary tasks before the end of this academic year – building projects, examinations, reports, school visits, prospective staff interviews, etc. What makes working at JHC interesting and so satisfying is that no one day is the same; it is a dynamic environment, with the ebb and flow of activity filled with the smiles of its inhabitants, the staff and students.
In the previous newsletter an interesting fact revealed itself in that no student at JHC had aspirations of becoming a teacher. In fact, this is a world-wide trend, in that teaching is viewed as a less glamourous job, a perception shaped, influenced and fueled by the media and television. However, teaching is the most important job in the world because teachers are our nation builders—the strength of every profession in any country grows out of the knowledge and skills that teachers help to instil in our children. Teachers have the capacity to shape the minds and futures of many – and they do so at all kinds of critical life stages. Kindergarten teachers introduce young minds to the wonder of learning – and to the basic tools of learning that students will use their entire lives. Middle School teachers have the onerous challenge of instilling a passion for academics in large groups of children, whose minds are so deeply focused on developmental issues and their idiosyncratic social worlds. High school teachers are charged with teaching detailed intellectual content to large groups of teenagers – whose worlds are often tumultuous on the inside and on the outside. College and university professors are charged with inspiring young adults – teaching them the nuts-and-bolts of highly technical content areas while showing them how limitless their life possibilities are. And in combination, across an individual’s lifespan, it is an army of teachers who have ultimately shaped how that individual understands the world and his or her place in it.
There are few roles in society that rival the importance of a great teacher. Stars in any field – music, athletics, engineering, medicine, politics – have an army of teachers to thank for teaching them the skills and values that currently allow them to be successful. Teachers are the builders of society – we build people – we build and develop future generations. There is no more important profession. Consequently, we as a community, district, state and nation, we must do more to fully appreciate and support their work.

JHC UNIFORM MATTERS
1. The Management of the school has decided to introduce Sunday wears for all our students to be worn on Sundays during their religious gatherings. Therefore, all students are expected upon return for the new academic year to have two (2) types of Ankara native outfit sewn in simple and decent designs of top and bottom trouser for boys and gown or skirt and blouse for girls.
2. As shared in previous newsletters, we will be introducing some additional uniform items. We have negotiated favourable prices and will share the cost of these soon. Please note that these items will be available at the start of the new academic year, 3 September 2016.
2.1. A black V-neck jersey or jumper with the school colours woven into the collar will be added in order to ward off the cold during the cooler Agbor months.
2.2. A senior student blazer (Year 10 students and above) is now introduced in order to distinguish our senior students from the rest of the school population. It is the normal JHC burgundy blazer but has an elegant black trim.
2.3. For all girls, a JHC scarf (embossed with the JHC logo) and pin is introduced JHC Uniform Blazer and Scarf Seniors to see sample.

JHC AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE REQUEST
We thank the parents who acquired the gear (overalls and boots) for their students. However, a handful of parents still need to buy this for their children and we encourage them to do so as a matter of urgency.
NEW STAFF
We welcome Mr Gbenga Akindele to James Hope College to take up the position of House Parent, Boys Boarding and Head of PE Teacher. He is a seasoned educator who cut his teeth for two decades at Grange School in various capacities. He fills in for Mr Okara who left with his family at the end of last term; also, Mr Raymond Ogodo, administration manager left for greener pastures. So we thank the Okara family and Mr Ogodo for their efforts whilst at JHC.
JHC UNIFORM UPDATE
During the April school break Ruth and I met some of our key suppliers in UK to negotiate better rates and cost savings. We will always attempt to procure locally but due to local constraints this is not possible for most of the time. Simmonds Ltd., our the uniform supplier has been tasked to provide certain school gear, for example, a jumper (to be added) for our students as it can become a bit chilly, a more fitting house-wear pants for our girls, a distinguishable school blazer for our soon-to-be senior students, etc. We will keep you informed about the progress.

Following up on an excellent Academic Review day, the JHC annual Sports Day was well attended and a great day as well. I have attached a brief collage of the event.
James Hope College is a growing and dynamic school and with the addition of at least sixty more students in September 2016, this will have implications for all our operations, from facilities management to teaching and learning. In addition, as we are moving toward senior examinations, both locally and internationally, it adds more complexity to the mix. JHC ACADEMIC REVIEW DAY
I wish to thank the parents for making the time to be at JHC and engage the teachers regarding the progress of their children. No doubt many found this to be enlightening and instructive. OTHER EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS
As shared with the parents on Saturday, I am very happy to announce that James Hope College has been accredited as an official Examination Centre for Edexcel examinations! Furthermore, the Ministry of Basic & Secondary Education, Delta State has approved JHC as an Examination Centre for the Basic Education Certificate.
CAMBIDGE INTERNATIONAL EXAMINATIONS (CIE) CHECKPOINT EXAMINATIONS
Please note that CIE has confirmed a few days ago that our Year 9 students are now registered to sit the CIE Checkpoint examinations (English, Mathematics and Science). As we have not yet been approved as a CIE examination centre, our students for this year, will do the examinations in Asaba on the 18th, 19th and 20th of April. Parents have been asked to complete an authorization form (required by CIE) which grants us permission to let them sit the examination at Infant Jesus School in Asaba. Please be assured that we will do the necessary in terms of safety and security when traveling and in Asaba. JHC TUITION FEE INCREASE
After much consideration and taking into account prevailing economic conditions, cost of living expenses and inflation, the JHC Board of Governors wish to announce that the school fees, which covers tuition and boarding, will increase by a modest 11.7%. The invoices for the 2016/2017 academic year will reflect these changes.

JHC TUITION FEE INCREASE
As intimated last year, JHC will be increasing its tuition fees for the 2016/2017 academic year. Be assured that prevailing economic conditions, cost of living expenses, inflation, etc. will be taken into account when the percentage of the fee increase is considered in order to make the increase as low as possible. Once finalised, then we shall share before the end of this term.
ASSESSMENT NEWS
Please be informed that we are in the process of registering our Year 9 students to sit for the CIE Checkpoint tests, as well as the local Basic Certificate of Education. Upon completion of registration, parents will be sent an account as examinations are for the parents account and does not form part of the tuition fees.
Furthermore, we would like to announce that JHC will be using an international acclaimed and accredited attainment and progress test, The Progressive Test Series, for our Years 7, 8 and 9’s;these year-on-year assessments support teachers in identifying current levels of attainment and monitoring progress in the core/compulsory subjects of English, Mathematics and the Sciences.
In addition, these tests are valuable as the data can be used for the following:
Benchmark knowledge and measure progress in the core subjects year-on-year
Identify pupils’ strengths and weaknesses, set targets and personalise learning
Implement and monitor interventions
Support communication with parents and other stakeholders.

It appears that we are now entering the dry season of the Agbor region, so more beautiful sunny weather on the way. Sunshine is a good source of vitamin D but it is a great mood improver too!
The activities in both academic and co-curricular spheres have been intensifying recently, from assessment to preparing for the next round of JHC Talent show. This coming weekend we will be hosting a group of three choreographers from Lagos who will attempt to teach all our students how to dance and perform in synchronisation. Apart from the learning dancing skills, I can guarantee that our students will enjoy the sessions with these professionals.
Like any other term, this one will be a busy one with assessments, examinations and co-curricular activities. I would like to thank those parents who have responded to our calls to have the correct schools shoes and socks for their children. We have standardised our assessment scoring system to be in line with the new IGCSE grading system. Please read the attached document titled, ‘Grade Boundaries for IGCSE’, which explains further.

An important message from Mr Alphonsus Anaukwu:
There has been an unavoidable and frequent breakdown of the students’ bikes in the course of their use for the club activities in the College. This means that the local bike mechanic is frequently being called upon to sort out the students’ broken bikes and carry out regular maintenance to guarantee their hitch free participation in our weekly activities. This is now a periodic arrangements and huge costs are unsurprisingly being incurred at every round of such visit.
The cost of the regular maintenance and repairs will now be borne by the parents whose children are in the club. It will cost five thousand naira (N5000.00) per participating student member of the club and ten thousand naira (N10, 000.00) if you have two children from the same household.

2. Staffing update
On behalf of the JHC Board of Governors, I wish to inform that Messrs. Taylor (English teacher) and Adeleye (ICT teacher) have submitted their resignations which was duly accepted; and we wish both all of the best. Recruitment has been concluded and the replacement for English, Mr Solomon Oduloye, is in situ; the new ICT teacher will join us in January 2016. In the meantime Mr Alphonsus Anaukwu, will teach the classes. The newly appointed staff are subject specialists and have experience and success in teaching their respective subjects to IGCSE level. We welcome the new staff to the JHC family as we expect great things from them.

Time flies when one is occupied and it even passes quicker when you enjoy yourself in what you are doing, this half-term has certainly flown by very fast. This Friday our students will return home for a week’s break with their loved ones and we encourage you to enjoy the time with them.
Here is a reminder of some key travel information:

JHC Scholarships
It is to be noted that 50% of the current JHC students enjoy scholarships. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit to exceptional students; and to enjoy the continuation of this privilege, students are expected to perform at the top level. Before the end of this term I will communicate to all the parents of our scholarship students about the performance of their children. Furthermore, commendation will be offered but recommendation for improvement will be shared when warranted. In extreme cases where performance slips then a scholarship can be withdrawn.
Value for Money
Likewise, we thank those parents who are full-fee payers for their patronage and custom. In comparing the services offered at JHC compared to what other residential schools charge, our parents are getting value for money. A quick survey suggests that our school fees are half of that of other similar schools. But more importantly, we continuously improve services and attempt to keep abreast of educational developments. One such important example and milestone is the use of the CAT4 assessments in the teaching and learning. By now all parents have received the electronic copies of the personalized assessment for their child which has a wealth of information about the abilities of your child and how you can assist in their further growth. Of course, our staff have access to more details and will customize teaching and learning to get the best out of the students in order to extend them to be the best that they can be.

Upon visiting the College you will notice that the signage from the main road is up and improved; moreover, the signage at the main gate looks great too!
Agbor Academic Initiative (AAI)
Part of the broader vision of our founder, Mr Jim Ovia, is to improve educational outcomes for the Agbor children. As such, we have started to engage schools and parents in our community to assist in identifying capable Year 5 students who will be provided additional tuition in the core/compulsory subjects of English, Mathematics and Sciences. These students will have the opportunity to sit for the JHC Admissions examination in January 2017, to compete for admission to JHC. This is a noble project that will reap great rewards in the future, not only for Agbor but for Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.
Zenith Christmas Youth Parade
Please note that this notice is for Lagos-based parents only. The Zenith Christmas Youth Parade is coming up on the 13th of December 2015. If you want your child to attend then please request this in writing to Mr Sunday Oloyede via email, sunday.oloyede@jameshopecollege.edu.ng
Furthermore, only a limited number of students will be selected to attend. We will have at least two staff to be with the selected students and due to the limited number no siblings or parents of these students will be allowed in the parade area unless they have been issued with the appropriate ID tag. More details will follow soon.
JHC Arts Competition
Well done to the students who performed in the recent Arts competition. They always manage to amaze and surprise us with the skills and talent on display. We will post some pictures on the web site soon.
Nigerian Traditional Dance
A local Nigerian Cultural Dance group have been teaching our students some traditional dances. It is fun and our students are doing very well.
JHC Uniform Update
Due to the abundance of rain in our locality, we have a desperate need to add to our school uniform some rain protection. Consequently, we have been sourcing and acquiring some samples of raincoats or Mackintosh’s. It will need to be waterproof, have ventilation holes and a hood to protect the head. We will share more information in the coming weeks and hope to have this as standard wear from term 2 onwards.
Furthermore, we could not but notice the variety of socks and shoes that our students are wearing. The standard length for socks are that it should be well above the ankles and below the knees. What some are wearing are known as sockettes or secret socks, which is not acceptable. The shoes are to be proper school shoes like Bata or Clarke’s. Our children’s feet are still growing and need the proper support and protection, for this reason flat shoes, pumps and fancy footwear are not acceptable. We will be expecting to see the students in the appropriate footwear upon their return on 1st November 2015.

The rainy season has not disappointed us in Agbor and in-between, we have had brief sunny spells. Over the last weekend, the students enjoyed chatting to their parents on the telephone for the first time since we resumed.

Welcome to the new school year for 2015/2016, we are looking forward to an exciting year. We hope you have all had a restful and enjoyable summer holiday. We would like to welcome back our returning families and extend a very warm welcome to our new families who have joined us this year. No doubt our students were eager to get back to school to meet old friends, make new friends and get to know new classmates and teachers. Our teachers have been busy over the last two weeks preparing classrooms to welcome our students.
September is a time for new beginnings. Unlike other industries, educators have the luxury of a new start each year, and for me there is something special about the opening of a new school year as opportunities abound to do things better and build upon successes. We want all children to learn because we know that all of your children are capable. You, the families that we serve, enhance the high quality of our school. You have high expectations for James Hope College and your children’s performance, and we applaud and welcome those expectations.
We have a few new staff to welcome, Mrs Funmi Gbadeyan, Chemistry and Science; Mr Mike Adeleye, ICT, and Miss Titilayo Raji, Business Studies. Dear Parents and Friends,
Only one week left before we say good-bye to the 2014/2015 academic year. However, the most important event, Honourary Day or the Annual Prize Giving Day is looming. Here are some updates:
- Attached please find the JHC Academic calendar for 2015/2016 with term dates, etc. Please note that the school reserves the right to change dates and will advise parents accordingly.
- By now all parents have been informed about the closure of Benin Airport due to construction. We were informed that this should only be for a month but please check before booking your children’s flight for our September resumption.
- Linked to the above, the Asaba to Abuja departure for this Saturday (4th July 2015) is in the early morning which means that some students will miss the Honourary Day. However, we will keep the school open for another day in order for these students to be part of the celebrations. As such they will depart early Sunday morning. Also, note that in the event of a flight cancellation on Sunday, parents need to make the necessary arrangements to uplift their children before the end of the day as staff will vacate later on Sunday for their holiday break.
- The programme for Honourary Day this Saturday is as follow:
10.00 – 11.00 am: Parents arrive and have tea and snacks in the Great Hall
11.20 – 11.25 am: Guests, Parents, Staff and Students are seated

Please be punctual as any delay means that students may miss flights from Asaba to Lagos later in the afternoon, for ‘time and tide’, even Arik flights, ‘wait for no man or woman’. Dear Parents and Friends
Warm greetings from a cool and wet Agbor where we have been blessed with rain showers over the last few weeks. Certainly these are welcomed blessings from heaven, for without rain farming would be difficult and without the farm produce we cannot prepare our favourite meals. But apart from the rains, we have so many other things to be thankful for, after all, none of us got to where we are alone, for we received assistance from our Creator, family, friends or other supporters.
A big thank you to the parents who have steadily been delivering the donations for the JHC Humanitarian Day…they are well received and will be making a difference to the lives of the less fortunate recipients. Furthermore, James Hope College has been in the grip of examination fever for the last week, and I can report that the operation has been a smooth and incident-free one. Well done to our students and staff involved and now we are waiting for the results in a few weeks’ time!

Greetings to all our parents, friends and supporters!
A heartfelt thank you from all of us at James Hope College for the support of our parents. This is done in various ways and one example was your attendance and participation at our annual James Hope College Fun Day. This is an opportunity for families and friends to meet other members of the JHC community, for time and space prevent such regular interactions. This event is getting bigger and more popular every year and we intend to expand it further for 2016. This year more than five hundred children from the village joined us, had fun and was send off with a healthy lunch. This was a kind and generous gesture and our own children were not fazed at all but took it in their stride and welcomed them as any good host would do. So well done to our fabulous children and their fantastic parents who raised them! A shout of praise to Mr Jim Ovia and Mrs Kaye Ovia who attended and fully enjoyed the interactions and activities. Not forgetting Zenith Bank, who sponsored the JHC Fun Day, and the team on the ground, they are to be commended for ensuring the success of the event. Well done and let’s keep up the good work!

World Humanitarian Day is observed on 19th August but as JHC will be on vacation, we shall be celebrating this earlier, on 19th June 2015. On this day, the effort and work of humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes are recognised. As the James Hope College community we request the support of our parent community in order to emulate these brave men and women.
As such the following donations are requested for the Humanitarian Day on the 19th June, 2015. Please note that no contribution is too small, after all, it is the thought that counts.

- Clothing items: Jeans, skirt, shirt, shoes/sneakers, etc.
- School items: bags, school shoes, reading books, textbooks, dictionaries, mathematical sets and writing materials (pen, pencils, rulers, erasers, exercise books, etc.)
- Food items: Baby food, cereal, pack of noodles, tubers of yam, rice, cooking oil, etc.
- Other items: Detergents, pack of juice, soft drinks, table water, bags of water (pure water), cooking utensils, cutleries, toys, toiletries, bedding materials, provisions, etc.

Teaching & Learning and End of Session Examinations
James Hope College is a happy and increasingly successful school. Our highest priorities are the quality of teaching and learning and the care of the students here. We have a clear sense of direction. We expect students to set themselves high standards in their work and relationships with others. We challenge them to do so and support them so that they will achieve. We do this to enable them to make the most of the opportunities offered here and to lay the foundations of success and personal development. We are fortunate in having a well-equipped, modern school and we are determined that JHC will be second to none in the quality of its staff, curriculum and teaching and learning.
Students will return to school on Sunday, 31st May, 2015 and will start their End of Session Exams on Friday, 5th June, 2015. This exam will cut across all topics covered from the beginning of the session in September, 2014. They will return home in July with their results slips. We enjoined our parents/guardians to monitor their wards while at home for the half-term break so that they do some meaningful revisions in order for them to maintain or surpass the standard that has already been built. The exam timetable has been given to each one of them.

Year 8 Students Visit Tehid Water Limited, Asaba Delta State !
Tehid Table Water Limited, the company visited is located at 96 Okpanam Asaba road, Asaba. The company is the largest private label bottled water company in southern Nigeria. It was established to provide high quality bottled water products to corporate and private individual throughout Delta state and its environs.
In partial fulfilment of the basic requirement for the teaching and learning of Design and Technology/Basic Technology at James Hope College, Agbor, Delta State. Our Year Eight Students went on a visit to Tehid Table Water limited, Asaba on the 29th of April, 2014.
The trip was geared towards providing our students the opportunity to have first-hand information, observe industrial processes of producing and packaging Table and sachet water as well as having the experience of how safety is observed in the factory/workshop. It also enables our student to learn with fun and while on transit/motion.

Dear Parents and Friends,
We have started term three in earnest with the arrival of staff and students last weekend. The students looked refreshed and are now easing into the usual routines of learning and study.
Since the Easter break several significant events occurred, the successful Nigerian elections, the violent and senseless xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa and the subsequent world-wide chorus of disapproval and condemnation, then just a few days ago, the natural disaster in Nepal in which several thousands died and many more families displaced. These events are heart-rendering and sad, for one life lost is one life too many, whether through an act of nature or man, as each life lost is a future lost, a family that has been deprived of a father or husband, mother or wife, brother or son, a sister or daughter. Our heart-felt prayers are with the families who are suffering and grieving because of their profound loss.
Albert Einstein once said, “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer”. How telling that one of the greatest geniuses of all time explained his success in this way. He gave credit not to his superior intellect, but to his tremendous persistence, in other words he was motivated. Of course, not everyone can come up with a theory that will forever change science. But everyone can use motivation to achieve personal success, beginning from an early age. Research has shown that motivated children do better in school – not necessarily because they feel they have to be the best, but because they are trying their best.
| A motivated child is likely to: |
- Choose tasks that are challenging.
- Begin tasks without having to be prodded.
- Show serious effort and concentration.
- Have a positive attitude toward learning and schoolwork.
- Use coping strategies to get through the rough times.
- Stick with tasks until successful completion.
A child who is not motivated is likely to:
- Choose work that is inappropriately easy.
- Need lots of prodding to get started.
- Put in minimal effort.
- Show a negative or apathetic attitude about learning and schoolwork.
- Give up quickly when the going gets tough.
- Leave many tasks unfinished.
Based on these characteristics, it is not difficult to see why motivated students are more successful! Motivated students can rightly take credit for their own achievements, but most of them also owe a debt to the people who started them out on the right path – their parents. As a parent you have a large role to play in whether or not your child will be motivated to do his best in school. In the end, it’s up to him or her – but you can create an encouraging environment.
There are many ways to motivate children based on their temperament and over the next few weeks I would like to share seven of these proven ways with you – it nearly works with every child. Implement these ideas, and you will assure your child your loving support – and that may be the best motivation your child could ever receive.
Arik Air has been experiencing issues resulting in delayed and cancelled flights which affects some of our students returning home, especially on the Benin – Lagos route. Our Port Harcourt parents have managed to nullify this by arranging their own reliable bus transport, perhaps it is time for our other affected parents to think about such an alternative. But please share your thoughts with me on this matter as safety should be paramount.
The JHC annual Fun Day will be held on Saturday, 9th of May, it will be a full day event and we planned to have it bigger than last year. As usual we will have invited guests and all parents and prospective parents are more than welcome to attend – more details to follow soon.

Dear Parents and Friends,
It has been two months now that I have had the privilege and pleasure to be at the helm of this wonderful school, it is made wonderful because of the zestful and refreshing nature of our children, dedicated staff, supportive parents and the great-heartedness of our benefactors.
I have read all the academic reports and overall there has been a marked improvement which is satisfying.
As a consequence, students have been recognized for their efforts and encouraged not to rest on their laurels but to exceed.
This has also been a busy two months with several projects and improvements running in parallel. As such I would like to share in brief some of these activities.
· Restructure of our assemblies programme – As a result students discussed and explored the meaning of values such as truth, diversity, responsibility, humility and integrity; but more importantly, how we can apply it in our daily routines in order to be a better student and person and a good friend.
· Phase II construction projects, like the swimming pool, third Student Hostel, third staff residence block, student medical clinic, second teaching block (technical & laboratories) are in the process to be completed before September 2015, in order to be ready for the new academic year.
· Improvements to our ICT facilities and internet connectivity.

James Hope College is a dynamic school and will continue to seek improvements to its operations in order to keep abreast of current developments on the educational landscape. And yet, not to be satisfied with this but to seek ways to set the pace. All in all, parents can be assured that their children, our students, will always be at the heart of every decision we deliberate, ponder and make.
In conclusion, as we break for the Easter vacation, I wish everyone, everything of the best and to enjoy the holidays with their loved ones. Gandhi said, ‘the future depends on what we do in the present’, or put in another way, actions have consequences, either positive or negative.

Following up on an excellent Academic Review day, the JHC annual Sports Day was well attended and a great day as well. I have attached a brief collage of the event. James Hope College is a growing and dynamic school and with the addition of at least sixty more students in September 2016, this will have implications for all our operations, from facilities management to teaching and learning. In addition, as we are moving toward senior examinations, both locally and internationally, it adds more complexity to the mix. As such we are constantly reviewing our operations and adjusting to these realities.
