ACADEMIC MATTERS: From the Vice-Principal (Academic)

James Hope College has successfully commenced the Senior Secondary School Programme with our pioneering students who are now in Year 10 (or SS 1). As we run both the Nigerian and British curricula, we have completed the merging of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) syllabus with that of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in all subjects. It is our hope that the students will complete their IGCSE programme in 2 years from start while they sit for their WASSCE in their 3rd year of Senior Secondary School.
We would like to use this opportunity to thank our parents for the support and cooperation they have provided to both staff and students since the inception of the school. This has reflected in the good performance put forward by our current Year 10 students in their Cambridge Checkpoint results.please Grading Points, the summary of the results which serves as the benchmark for the school.

We have looked into the overall performance critically and we will focus on all identified areas that require improvement. If you need further clarification on any academic matter, please send a mail to the Principal or to me on clement.ikuyinminu@jameshopecollege.edu.ng and we will respond to your queries in good time.

James Hope College is now using the CAT4 assessments as one of its key assessment tools. As such a handful of staff attended a workshop in Lagos to learn more about this valuable and time-tested assessment. Furthermore, all staff will have continuous professional development over the next few months, in understanding this completely and applying this to get the best out of all our students in improving academic attainment. Please read the attached appendix, entitled, ‘What is CAT4 1December 2015’. This will be the first of several information leaflets to keep our parents and school community informed about CATs.

4. Learning outside the classroom (LOTC)

Teaching and learning happens not only in the classroom but also outside its walls. Thus, the importance of school fieldtrips, it provide students with a window to the real world that they don’t get in the classroom, and they can help students understand real-world applications of seemingly abstract topics in math, science and other subjects.

Regarding visiting cultural and heritage sites, an educational researcher said, ’Enriching field trips contribute to the development of students into civilised young men and women who possess more knowledge about art, have stronger critical-thinking skills, exhibit increased historical empathy, display higher levels of tolerance, and have a greater taste for consuming art and culture’.
Furthermore, several studies have shown that students retain more knowledge through the type of experience-based learning that field trips provide when compared to in-class learning.

In view of the aforementioned, we are planning a few local fieldtrips in the coming months and will share accordingly. It is also our explicit intention to research an international fieldtrip in the next academic year for our senior students. As usual we will do the necessary risk assessments to ensure safety and security as a priority before the commencement of any field trip.

For more information or clarification on any matter, please feel free to contact me at either, abraham.swart@jameshopecollege.edu.ng or 070 2640 8585

In conclusion, ‘Learn to see things backwards, inside out, and upside down’; and, ’The most difficult thing in life is to know yourself’.

Enjoy the week ahead!
Yours sincerely

1. JHC Bike Club

An important message from Mr Alphonsus Anaukwu:

There has been an unavoidable and frequent breakdown of the students’ bikes in the course of their use for the club activities in the College. This means that the local bike mechanic is frequently being called upon to sort out the students’ broken bikes and carry out regular maintenance to guarantee their hitch free participation in our weekly activities. This is now a periodic arrangements and huge costs are unsurprisingly being incurred at every round of such visit.

The cost of the regular maintenance and repairs will now be borne by the parents whose children are in the club. It will cost five thousand naira (N5000.00) per participating student member of the club and ten thousand naira (N10, 000.00) if you have two children from the same household.

Please arrange to pay into the College account whose detail is provided below (on or before the 15th of November 2015), the above-mentioned amount of money.
